Before "Pat," books for very little children were for reading aloud and looking at. "Wrote" is not quite the right word, even though the book is 135 words long "made" would be more accurate. My mother wrote "Pat the Bunny" in 1940 when I was 12. Attention, future authors: rabbits are proven winners at the box office. It is the star of "Pat the Bunny," the best-selling American children's book of all time and the second best-selling children's book in this country - second only to Beatrix Potter's esteemed British hare, Peter Rabbit, who turned 87 recently. This one is soft and white and made for patting. I've always loved you, Bugs, but now that you've had your day, move over and make room for another rabbit also celebrating that golden birthday year. EARLIER this year, in every magazine I opened, there was Bugs Bunny turning 50.
